Leukemia & Lymphoma Society @WA/AK) Names Student of the Year

Rogers High School Junior Sophia Diseth has been named Student of the Year by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Washington/Alaska chapter for making a difference in the fight against blood cancers.

Despite the limitations during the pandemic, Diseth led a team of students, teachers, and family members during a 7-week campaign to raise more than $30,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Students on the team included Jackson McGowan, Emerald Ridge; Maiya Waterstraat, Rogers; Abram Zantkovsky, Rogers; and Minwoo Choo 2019 Rogers graduate.

The team held a kickoff event last February and they wrote letters, contacted businesses for sponsorship, held a bake sale, and posted information about the campaign on social media. Part of the strategy was to describe the reasons it is important to the team to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. On March 14, they held an auction and a fun run in downtown Puyallup.

Then the stay-at-home order came from Governor Inslee and future events were cancelled. The team continued to persevere while raising money through social media.

Diseth has long held an interest in supporting the community and became involved in fundraising for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society while attending Stahl Junior High.

She was nominated for the recognition by Stahl Principal Troy Hodge.

The Student(s) of the Year is awarded to the candidate or co-candidates in each community who raise the most money during the competition. An auction and a celebration are held every year in Seattle to celebrate the students and all their hard work. This year, the event was held via Zoom.
